A Mal-shi, also known as a Malt-tzu or Malti-zu, is a cross between a Maltese and shih tzu. They’re usually F1 crosses, meaning the parents are a purebred Maltese and a purebred shih tzu. Mal-shis have been bred since the 1990s to be a low-shedding companion dog that’s good with kids and loves to cuddle.
Mal-shis are affectionate, loving and devoted to their owner, which are traits they get from both the Maltese and shih tzu. The shih tzu side also makes them alert and fearless and apt to bark when something doesn’t seem right. Mal-shis are fast learners, so you should be able to teach them tricks easily.
Adult Mal-shis can weigh anywhere between 5 and 15 pounds, although 6 to 12 pounds is more typical. Their height at the shoulder should be at least 10 inches, although it can be as high as 20 inches. The coat is typically long and soft, with a slight wave, and the colors can be any combination of white, black and brown. Some owners keep a Mal-shi’s coat trimmed short for easier maintenance.
